Is Dental Treatment in Bali Safe?

A checklist you can use with any clinic, and how UDC answers it

Dental treatment in Bali can be safe, but safety depends on the clinic, not the country. Before you book, check four things: the dentist’s registration, sterilisation practice, materials, and what happens if something goes wrong after you fly home.

Seven things to check before you book

  1. Registration. Ask to see the dentist’s STR (registration certificate) and SIP (practice licence), and the clinic’s operating permit.
  2. Who plans your treatment. For implants and smile makeovers, ask whether a specialist plans and carries out the work. At UDC, our team includes a specialist prosthodontist, drg. Harry Iskandar, Sp.Pros (Universitas Airlangga), and an endodontist, drg. Maria (Universitas Gadjah Mada).
  3. Sterilisation. Ask how instruments are sterilised and which items are single-use. Any clinic should answer this clearly.
  4. Materials and brands. Ask which implant system and ceramic material will be used, and ask for it in writing. UDC places Direct Implant and BB Implant systems, and veneers can be made in composite or porcelain.
  5. Imaging and a written plan. Ask for X-rays or a 3D scan and an itemised treatment plan before any work starts. UDC offers a free consultation and treatment plan, and sends before-and-after photos of your treatment.
  6. Warranty. Ask what is covered and for how long. At UDC, an implant is under warranty until the crown is fitted. There is no warranty after that, so ask us about aftercare and what happens if you need an adjustment.
  7. Follow-up after you fly home. Ask how you can reach the clinic and who handles problems. UDC patients can message the team on WhatsApp after they return.

“Dr. Harry and his staff are truly professional in every sense of the word.”

“Pristine clinic, great staff who explain everything they do before they do it including pricing, taking and providing photos before and after. No rushing treatment.”

Drew Van den Berg, Google review, February 2025

Risks to understand

  • Veneers are irreversible, because a thin layer of enamel is prepared first.
  • Implants need time to heal before the crown is fitted, so plan a second trip at least three months after the first.
  • New crowns and veneers may need small bite adjustments after a few days.
  • An Australian dentist may not be able to repair or give a warranty on work done overseas. Keep your records and X-rays.
  • Every dental treatment carries risks. Your dentist should explain them before you agree to treatment.

How much time to plan

Cleaning or whitening usually takes one visit. Composite veneers can be done in a single visit. Porcelain veneers take two visits about 7 days apart. Root canal treatment takes about two weeks and 2 to 4 visits, and some cases can be completed in one visit. Implants need two trips at least three months apart. Message us your travel dates before you book flights, and we will plan around them.

Before you travel

  • Tell your own dentist your plan and bring recent X-rays and records.
  • Tell us about your medical history, medications and allergies, including blood thinners and diabetes.
  • Book ahead. We work by appointment and are usually full within a week.

Insurance

We have direct billing partnerships with only a few international insurers. For other insurers you pay at the clinic, and we provide an official invoice and a medical report that you can use to claim from your insurer or health fund. Check with your fund first. We are not a BPJS provider.
